This second cover was to feature a woman with high tech gear doing something stealthy, holding a sniper rifle. Jim told me, “We want to cover as much of the canvas as possible so she needs to be striking a pose without striking a pose.” This rule would also apply to all subsequent covers.

Once I started working, it came together very quickly. In my mind, she was called Friday from the very beginning, as I pictured here as a super-competent, resourceful woman who could do anything she set out to do. I pictured her as almost an anti-Bond personality. She didn’t need to be flashy — she just did what needed doing.
