The folks at AEG were in a time crunch. They wanted a cover reminiscent of the art from Metal Gear Solid 2 — a simple ink wash. I put together a very rough audition piece, to show I could work in that style. This was approved, and the go ahead was given to work on the first two covers. If these went well, I knew I would have the opportunity to be the cover artist for the entire line. No pressure.
This first cover was to feature the super secret spy guy in a thigh-up shot. I started with a simple pencil sketch for the pose, and added armor and weapons in Photoshop. Some of the body armor’s details were based on the title character in the movie Blade. The weapon is a silenced Glock. I was trying more for attitude and style than accuracy with details or positioning, as I knew that would win the day.
